Schoolchildren of the COVID-19 Pandemic: Impact and Opportunities

Preface : In the early months of 2020, the COVID-19 Coronavirus emerged as a life-changing event which would change the world as we knew it. While all facets of our lives have been altered, it very likely that the education system will forever be changed. For two years, our children have been learning online, in a hybrid mode, or in schools where social distancing practices have become the norm. When the virus was first detected in the United States, all schools closed and halted traditional face-to-face instruction and quickly moved to some type of online learning. This left educators and children in unfamiliar positions as teachers quickly scrambled to learn how to teach classes online as a way to salvage the school year and to maintain some semblance of order in our education system. While the generation of “COVID Children” will always remain as a unique cohort, there is no doubt that the results and repercussions of this most unusual experience will have implications that are far-reaching and of consequence to all of us. In the United States, families and society are gradually returning to some semblance of normalcy, however, the short- and long-term impact of what we have just collectively experienced, and what this experience has meant to our children, is yet to be fully explored or realized. Data are beginning to come in which highlight how children were impacted by COVID-19, but more longitudinal research will be needed to examine what lasting effects this has had on our youth.....

Moving Spaces and Places

Preface : When Progressive Connexions opened the floor for the theme of spaces and places, a gathering of scholars and professionals took place that reached across an overwhelming variety of disciplines and touched upon a wide array of topics related to spaces and places. The topic of movement stood out, among others. Movement in a literal sense of moving bodies through space and place, and movement in a more figurative way, of shifting perceptions and affects for spaces and places, affect in the meaning of a transitional product of an encounter through the senses. After a first conference on spaces and places, in Bruges, Belgium, in April 2019, the collaboration for this book was started. But then, the project got intercepted by the pandemic, causing serious delays. Luckily, both Emerald Publishers Ltd and Progressive Connexions allowed us to suspend and seek new contributions during a second event on spaces and places, which took place online in March 2021. We were thrilled to find, again, refreshing and cross-cutting perspectives on movement in relation to space and place. Again, however, the road through the pandemic remained bumpy, and new shuffles in the composition of contributions occurred over the course of 2021.....

Public Value Co-Creation

Introduction : There is now a shared recognition that public value is inherently co-created not only by government but also by other actors and sectors, and by government-citizens relations (Borgonovi & Mussari, 2011; Bryson et al., 2017; Crosby et al., 2017; Vangen et al., 2015). However, very often, public management as a professional field of practice is traditionally associated with the leadership, governance and management within a single public organization. From that perspective, public management would be just about internal procedures and processes that can generate some kinds of outputs and/or products leading to a certain level of organizational performance.0000

ICT and Innovation in Teaching Learning Methods in Higher Education

Abstract : The role of information and communication technology (ICT) in education is increasingly gaining importance in institutions of higher education. Operationally, ICT has helped to cut costs and speed up transactions by streamlining and automating processes. Pedagogically, it has enabled online, hybrid, and technology enhanced learning as well as a host of other capabilities, from learning management systems to student information system, and from student affairs to academic affairs. ICT is now embedded in every aspect of university life. The role of ICT is found to increase the value of classroom delivery, it has helped in the growth of research, expanding horizons for students mainly with limited accessibility to education and it has created an overall positive impact in the teaching–learning environment in general. There are always two sides to the coin and in this case inaccessibility, economic disparity, and ineffective implementation of ICT has also created impediments for effectively adopting and diffusing integration of ICT into pedagogy. This volume is a collection of interventions and collaborative practices across the world that showcases the multifaceted ways of how various institutions have been engaged in supporting teaching and learning with the use of technology and how it is equipping our future generation with the skills required to face a changing job market.

Changing the Conventional University Classroom

Abstract : The strictest definition of teaching and learning is no longer what it used to be with innovation becoming an important component of classroom teaching. The fact that classroom teaching has moved beyond the walls and to the homes of students confined to hand-held device or their computer is in itself a rare feat that academics couldn’t imagine even a few years ago. Innovation in teaching and learning is bringing qualitative change in higher education along with quantitative expansion. Changes are essential part of teaching and learning as it helps in improving the quality and equity in creating learning opportunities for students. Teaching and learning have been undergoing rapid changes and is never considered to be a change averse sector; however, in certain parts of the world, the acceptance toward change has been very slow and they are lagging behind in adopting technology, improving efficiency, and productivity and the quality standard of education.

Clean Language Interviewing

Abstract : We are delighted to present this introduction to the innovative practice of clean language interviewing for research. The aim of the book is to inform research practice through explaining the principles and methods of clean language and how they apply to research interviewing, illustrated by a variety of application cases. The key contribution of CLI is to improve researchers' ability to obtain data that are faithful to the experience of the interviewee, particularly by minimising the introduction of the interviewer's assumptions and by avoiding leading questions. This is a vital skill for researchers working in settings such as academia, business, market research, healthcare, education and more – therefore the book is intended for both academic and applied researchers. The book aims to be a landmark publication that defines the ‘state of the art’ of the field. It is authoritative, written by pioneers and leading practitioners of CLI and is informed by international, real-world experience from a variety of fields that include academic research, market research, journalism and conflict resolution. It complements existing volumes on clean language and its applications such as Lawley and Tompkins (2000), Sullivan and Rees (2008), and Walker (2014a), among others.

Human Dignity

Abstract : This chapter shows that Kant’s notion of human dignity can be understood as a novel ‘care of the self’ and an ‘art of not being governed’. Drawing on a Foucauldian approach, it demonstrates that Kant intends to shape an ethical subject that strives for freedom and self-mastery. It also argues Kant’s idea of dignity embodies a political and spiritual form of resistance against dominant relations of power and subjectivities. Thanks to this novel perspective, this chapter also offers novel insights on the political force of human dignity. With Kant, this notion becomes a ‘government of the self by oneself’.

Attaining the 2030 Sustainable Development Goal of Quality Education

Preface : The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in September 2015 provide a universal call to action to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure that by 2030 all people enjoy peace and prosperity. They also entail elements of importance towards a strategic business engagement with sustainability issues. These offer a framework which provides businesses with a systematic approach to identify new business opportunities while contributing to the solution of the grand sustainability challenges facing the world today, including climate change. Each SDG, if achieved, will have a direct and significant positive impact on millions of people's lives around the world and the environment in which they live.

Braver Leaders in Action

Preface : Making changes in any business is scary – getting the culture ‘right’, especially when it needs to change significantly from the current state, is not straightforward. Getting individuals to focus on a wide range of factors, not only profit but also, for example, people development, mental health, climate change and wider environmental, social and governance matters, is not easy. This book provides a go-to reference for management of how to make changes in personal style, thinking and actions to achieve significant change in business and to do so without fear.

The Economics of COVID-19

Abstract : This chapter studies the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on the economic structure of the US and EU economies by measuring its impact on some reference macro-economic variables. We use a factor model approach on a set of variables available at different frequencies (daily, weekly, monthly, and quarterly) and provide evidence of instability in the primary factors driving the economy. A sequential analysis of the factors allows us to evaluate the model's forecasting performance and extract some instability measures based on the factor model's eigenvalues. Finally, we show how to use COVID-related variables, such as policy, economic, and health indicators, to compute conditional forecasts with factor models, and perform a scenario analysis on the variables of interest to understand economic instability.
